Illuminated Manuscript Phonograph Project

In this project, I have tried to find an ideal way to viscerally experience and explore sound in image.  This is still an open question.   Obviously, at any point I could have bought a record player and recording sound is very simple these days.  This does not solve my problem.  Record players do not operate using physical action from the listener. I want a device that reveals material (in my case sound) actively — like a pen or magnifying glass.  Sound is discoverable and ephemeral within recording material.
